The Brewer's Corner -Frank Fermino, Head Brewer John Harvard’s Brew House

Welcome once again to the John Harvard’s Brew House “Brewer’s Corner”, where we provide information and entertain everyone with the inner workings of the brew house here in our little corner of the world. FIRST SIP

If you haven’t been in for a visit for a while, what are you waiting for?!? The John Harvard’s staff is waiting to provide you with the best summertime air-conditioned dining and drinking experience you can have. Our mug club party was a huge success as well as the Fire Engine Red and COPper ale promotion. Thanks for all of your support.

Summer is here and so are all those summer beers of which many are made with wheat. But what if you crave a dark beer? Can you have one in the summer and not be bloated or full? Of course you can. Enter the dark wheat beer! The Dunkelweizen, one of my favorite styles, has an aroma that is reasonably balanced and fairly prominent. Noble hop character ranges from low to none and a light to moderate wheat aroma (which might be perceived as bready or grainy) may be present and is often accompanied by a caramel, bread crust, or richer malt. The appearance is light copper to mahogany brown in color, and the flavor is much like the aroma. The soft, somewhat bready or grainy flavor of wheat is complementary, as is a richer caramel and/or melanoidin character from Munich and/or Vienna malt. Without getting too technical, the overall impression of this beer is a moderately dark, refreshing wheat-based ale, reflecting the best yeast and wheat character of a hefeweizen blended with the malty richness of a Munich Dunkel. Wow! Sounds like a lot to know, but my job as the brewer is not only to make good beer, but to educate as well. I hope this has you interested in Dark Wheat beers, and one is on tap now so be sure to stop by.

 HALF GLASS

Currently on tap are the John Harvard’s Light and our Flagship John Harvard’s Pale Ale. In addition to these standard offerings, we have the Tribute Amber Ale, The Hue with a Tan, Castle in the Clouds IPA and the first of the Belgium style brews, the Silver Fox Saison. I am also learning more about Cask-Conditioned beers so we are offering the John Harvard’s Pale Ale until it runs out. As always, cask beers are limited in quantity so get it while you can.

THE FINISHING GULP

Upcoming beers for the remainder of August will include a couple of more Belgians, Zoe’s Belgium Wit and the Belgian Pale Ale.  Also, the N.F.aLe, which should get us all ready for the upcoming football season.
